Story:
The storyline is situated right after the Project .hack games, and right before the anime Roots. For convenience's sake, only two years have passed between SIGN and ROOTS, meaning that old-series characters are but barely older if applied for here.
Any and all events that happen prior to Roots are considered to have already happened here; this is extremely important if you wish to use a character from the previous timelines, such as Tsukasa, Kite or Shugo. These events include the AI Buster novels, SIGN, the games Infection, Mutation, Outbreak and Quarantine, DUSK (or Legend of the Twilight) and Liminality.
After a catastrophic fire at the CC Corp building, most of the data for The World, the largest and most popular MMORPG of all time, was lost. The World Revision 2, R:2 for short, was developped to replace this damaged game and start anew. It introduced brand new character classes, a level scale that went up to 150 rather than 99, and none of the mysterious server incidents the previous incarnation of the game had.
Sadly, since all data was lost or fragmented, it was not possible to transfer anything from the original The World to The World R:2.
The Goddess, Aura, has disappeared completely months prior to the fire, after years of faithful moderation over The World. With her departure came an increase in PKs, Player Killers, and a decrease in the overall respect for the rules.
With The World R:2, some of these problems remain. Although the rules are bright and new, there is still a sickening amount of PKs to be found, although, thankfully, some of the disadvantages of dying have been removed.
