This is a description of each rank and what they can. But that doesn?t mean, that formal approved genin can be also as strong as a Jounin. The same happened with Naruto, he was formal a genin, but he could rival even Jounin ranked ninja. So these ranks are just formal ones and doesn?t give off ones power.
Academy Student: They are the lowest class of ninja, they are most likely entering the school or academy at the age of 6, some later and some exceptional at earlier ages. In the school, they are taught about the codes of the shinobi, that are something like rules to them, like: Don?t kill your friends, but your mission is more important than anything. Here they learn the basic jutsu, like henge or bunshin.
Genin: After making it through the exam they officially become genin. They now are learning under a sensei that is given to them and have to fulfill requests and orders. Most of the time these teacher and leaders are jounin, leading this four man cell, as it is consisting of three genin and one jounin, maybe a tokubetsu jounin. They then find out through the time they are together what the genin is able to do and what he should become later. Then they try to either train the genin with the most useful basic skills and as soon as they need to specialize, like when they want to become medic nin, they are given to the specialist learning the needed skills.
Chuunin: The chuunin rank is obtained after going through the chuunin exam and getting a passing grade. To get into the chuunin exam, the teacher has to say that his students are ready to do so. If not, they stay and have to train more getting in teh next exam. This exams are mostly happening once each half year. With this level, one can get into work, like becoming a teacher at the academy, working in the official police or other means of work. The normal age to become a chuunin is far, some even become chuunin at the young age of 14, but mostly they are participating in the chuunin exam at older ages around 20.
Tokubetsu Jounin: Also called specialized jounin, they have specialized in one field and have gotten that good, that they were promoted because of it. These are interrogators, full fledged medic nin or scouts. But there are many more things one can specialize in. With this rank one gets finally the right to get into the anbu. There they can move up to become squad vice leader, until they reach the jounin rank. The youngest tokubetsu is around 18 and there should be no exceptions as before one reach this rank he ahs to do many dangerous missions and accomplish them. Therefore the kage has to get knowledge and see what one has accomplished.
Jounin: The promotion to jounin is a hard one, it is said that each Kage has his own way to do so. One is to accomplish a very hard mission totally alone and without fail. But as said, there seem to be many ways to become jounin. Jounin are told to supervise a squad and are able to do many hard and difficult missions alone.
Sannin/The seven swordsman: These are highly advanced and experienced jounin that have a high reputation and that have mastered everything they could. They are in most cases the next in line for the seat of the kage. In each village there are different types of this.
Daimyo: These are the leader of one country, they are highly skilled as their position brings that with them and they are targeted by many factions to take over one country, but they are also highly guarded by other nin to ensure their safety.
Kage: These are the village leaders. Only the biggest nations have a kage, an example is the hokage for Konohagakure or the mizukage for Kirigakure. They are master of many elements and have much knowledge and wisdom on the condition of the village, tehy are also the leader of the ANBU and can either take missions or decline them.
Specialized Ranks: These are ranks that somehow doesn?t fit into the ones before, like medic ninja and hunting nin.
Medic-Nin: They work not under the kage and don?t take on missions, they are mostly accomodated in hospitals and only get into missions on request to aid a team or a 4 man cell.
Hunting-Nin: There are a wide variety of hunting nin, for each village there is one hunting nin team and they have leaders and subordinates, a famous example are the hunting nin of konoha gakure, also called ANBU.
